Thuppakki

A Tamil action film set in Mumbai. Jagadish is an army captain. He comes home on leave and his family is looking for a bride for him. A bus explodes in the city. Jagadish is at the scene. He notices a man in the crowd: someone moving away just before the blast. He follows him. When he catches him he learns something. There is a cell of thirteen in the city and each lives somewhere else under a different identity. None of them knows the others. The orders come from one man. From there the film is a story about a list. Jagadish finds the addresses one by one and goes to them one by one. His method is not official. He does not go to the police, does not report to the army, and the narrative says plainly why. A romantic line runs alongside. Nisha is a boxing coach and the family wants him to marry her; he does not stop his work for a single day. These two lines sitting side by side is the strangest thing about the film. A pursuit in one scene, a song in the next. What the narrative is interested in is not terror but invisibility: its idea is that the threat is not far away but inside ordinary life, in the next flat. The main villain arrives late. He is calm, talks like a teacher, and never applies violence himself. The action is exaggerated and the narrative does not hide it. The same director remade the story in Hindi two years later. Vijay, Kajal Aggarwal, Vidyut Jammwal and Sathyan are in the cast. A. R. Murugadoss wrote and directed. Who it is for: anyone who likes mainstream Tamil action and star-centred narrative. Who it is not for: anyone looking for realism; the hero never tires, is never wrong, and the narrative does not question it.
