What Vishwaroopam Is About
Viswanathan teaches Kathak dance in New York and strikes his wife as soft and dull. Nirupama, a nuclear oncologist, is thinking about divorce and hires a private detective to follow him. What she finds stops being a marital matter and goes somewhere else entirely: neither his identity nor his past is what she assumed. Kamal Haasan wrote, directed and starred in it, and the Afghanistan sections are its most ambitious stretch. The film was banned in Tamil Nadu for weeks in 2013 and only reached screens after negotiation. The argument about how it represents Muslims has followed it ever since.
