What Ghost of the Mountains Is About
The documentary follows a film crew trying to find and record the snow leopard in the mountains of China. The animal is extremely wary and rarely seen; on a high plateau the crew struggles for months with harsh weather and difficult ground. The film in this way tells both the life of the animal and what it takes to obtain such footage. Showing what happens behind the camera also lays open how the flawless image in nature documentaries comes about. The account does not give the animal a personality or invent a story for it; it shows as much as it saw. The length of the waiting becomes a subject of the film as well. Ben Wallis’s seventy eight minute documentary was completed in 2017.
