Girl with a Suitcase

Aida, trying to make a living as a singer, comes to Parma to find the man who deceived her. He does not appear, and in his place comes his sixteen-year-old brother Lorenzo, sent to get rid of her, who falls in love with her instead. Aida does not know what to do; she has no money, she is tired, and she expects the same thing from every man. Valerio Zurlini shows the difference of class directly: Lorenzo's family is wealthy and treats the woman as a problem. Claudia Cardinale became known through the part, counted as her first major performance, and Jacques Perrin plays the boy. The film does not build a love story; it shows that one cannot be built. The black-and-white photography and the streets of Parma carry the mood. Who it is for: viewers who like Italian cinema of the sixties and drama built on class. Who it is not for: anyone expecting a happy ending.
