What Gizmo! Is About
The documentary shows a selection out of the thousands of inventions that did things nobody needed doing, or did familiar things in ways nobody would have considered. Winged suits attempting flight, kitchen devices that run themselves, walking machines; all of it comes from newsreels and archive footage of the time. The account does not mock these people; it offers a respectful, joking salute to inventors whose vision reached far and missed the target by a little. Seen from now, the same footage is also a record of what a period believed and of what it thought possible. Howard Smith’s seventy seven minute American documentary was completed in 1977.
