Godard Mon Amour

A film about Godard at the end of the 1960s. 1967. The director is in his late thirties and known worldwide. He marries the young actress Anne Wiazemsky and makes a film with her. At the same time his involvement in politics grows: he starts rejecting his earlier films, counts making films for an audience a bourgeois habit, and argues with his friends. Then the events of 1968 arrive. Godard is in the street, at meetings and at student occupations; but wherever he goes something is expected of him, and he rejects that role too. The film's view is not admiring. As the man defends his principles he hardens towards the people around him, and his marriage fails because of it. The narrative gives events from Anne's side. The register is comic; the film imitates Godard's own cinematic language and uses it as a joke: intertitles, addressing the camera, interruptions by a narrator. The source is Anne Wiazemsky's memoir. Louis Garrel plays Godard and Stacy Martin plays Anne. Michel Hazanavicius directed. It was shown at Cannes and caused argument; some said the director had been treated unfairly. An entertaining example for anyone who likes film history and biographical satire. For a viewer expecting a serious portrait, the film is mocking throughout and does not defend its subject.
