What Gone with the Light Is About
Dong Runnian's film begins with a light falling over the city one morning. When it passes, some people are gone; a teacher returns to his classroom to find part of it empty. Then an explanation with no scientific basis starts circulating: the light took only those who genuinely loved each other. That is where the real subject comes from. For the couples left behind it works like a verdict passed publicly on their marriages, and everyone starts calculating what the neighbours are thinking. The science fiction frame is there, but this is not a disaster story; it is a relationship drama that pulls the cover off middle class life. Huang Bo leads.
