What Grand Central Murder Is About
S. Sylvan Simon's 1942 film opens with Mida King, a Broadway starlet who has climbed over everyone in her way, found dead at Grand Central Station. Inspector Gunther gathers every suspect into one room and starts questioning them; her list of enemies is long. One of the suspects is Rocky Custer, a private detective with a sharp mouth, and he is the one who begins putting the crime together. Squeezed into seventy-three minutes and told in flashbacks, it is an MGM picture that never separates the comedy from the mystery. Van Heflin's detective carries it. One of the quick, enjoyable examples of the era's small-budget puzzle films.
