Lust for Gold

In Arizona there is a legend of a gold mine called the Lost Dutchman: nobody knows where it is, and those who look for it do not come back. In the present a man tries to find it by following his grandfather's traces. From there the film goes back to the 1880s and tells the story of the German immigrant who found the mine first. A married woman attaches herself to him, and both of them plan to use the other. George Marshall's film counts among those that join the western to the structure of film noir: there is no hero and everyone is deceiving everyone. Ida Lupino plays the woman and Glenn Ford the miner, and both are pitiless. The Lost Dutchman mine is a real Arizona legend and people are still looking for it. The film's present-day frame offers the story as a rumour.
