What Grand Tour Is About

In Rangoon in 1918 Edward, a British civil servant, runs away just as Molly, the fiancée he has kept waiting for years, is about to come ashore. When Molly arrives she goes after him, and the two cross Asia end to end without finding each other: Singapore, Bangkok, Saigon, Manila, Osaka, Shanghai. Miguel Gomes splits the film in two, the first half his flight, the second her pursuit. The fiction is shot in a studio in black and white, with colour documentary footage from present-day Asia cutting in and narration in local languages. The two times blend and the film does not explain it. It won best director at Cannes. Who it is for: viewers who like formal experiment and slow cinema. Who it is not for: anyone wanting a straight narrative, since the film sets its own rules.
