Miguel Gomes goes into the Portuguese interior to shoot a summer film, the money runs short, the cast does not materialise, and the film cannot be made. Rather than hide the collapse he films it: the first half documents August in the villages, the travelling bands, the fairs, the fire watches and the people. Then, at some point and without warning, the fiction starts, and faces we met in the documentary turn into characters. The transition is so soft that you cannot say when you crossed, which is the whole idea. The story eventually settles on a father, his daughter and her cousin. The provincial pop heard throughout is the spine of the thing. Who it is for: viewers who like films that interrogate the border between fiction and documentary. Who it is not for: anyone bored by films whose structure is the game.
