What Grandma and Her Ghosts Is About
Five year old Doudou, sent to stay with his grandmother in a small Taiwanese town because his mother is in hospital, does not take to her at first. Then he discovers that she does not only sell food on the street but also catches and quiets ghosts. Giving in to curiosity, the boy releases the most dangerous of them, and every spirit in the town comes after him. The account gives Taiwanese folk belief and the ghost month from a child’s eye, putting fear and humour in the same scene. Wang Hsiao-Ti’s eighty minute Taiwanese animation was watched by generations in the country and was restored years later; it was completed in 1998.
