A mother and daughter living in a decaying mansion on Long Island let the cameras in and begin talking. The method has been argued over: the crew is visible and even addressed, and the two women are plainly performing for the lens. What emerges is not false for that, because the performance is part of how they live. The house is derelict, with cats and raccoons indoors, and the film declines to make that a source of disgust. Watching it you laugh and feel uneasy, and that division is the point.
