What Germany in Autumn Is About

In the autumn of 1977 West Germany lived for forty-four days with a single sequence of events: the kidnapping of the industrialist Hanns Martin Schleyer by the Red Army Faction, then his killing, and in the same days the deaths of Andreas Baader, Gudrun Ensslin and Jan Carl Raspe in Stammheim prison. The film is about those days. Eleven directors made the film together; among them Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Alexander Kluge, Volker Schlöndorff, Edgar Reitz, Bernhard Sinkel, Alf Brustellin, Katja Rupé and Hans Peter Cloos. Heinrich Böll contributed to the writing. The sections do not resemble one another: some documentary, some fiction, some plain anger. The deaths in the prison were entered in the official record as suicides and were disputed at the time; the film shows the dispute itself.
