Gumraah

Vardhan Ketkar's 2023 Hindi film is a remake of the Tamil production Thadam. A murder investigation stalls when the police encounter two suspects who look exactly alike. Each says the other did it, and the evidence points at both. The idea is solid and comes from the original: the audience knows no better than the police which of them is telling the truth. Aditya Roy Kapur plays both roles and tries to separate the characters behaviourally rather than physically. The remake does not fully catch the tight pace of the original; some scenes are extended and the investigative sections weakened. Mrunal Thakur plays the officer leading the case, and the character having too little room drew criticism. Who it's for: those who like detective films built on games of identity. Who it's not for: viewers who have seen the original; this version repeats the same surprise more loosely.
