What I Saw the Sun Is About

A large family living in a mountain village in Kars has to leave it because of the armed conflict in the region, and arrives in Istanbul, in the back streets of Beyoglu. The city does not treat them any more gently than the village did. Mahsun Kirmizigul builds the film on the village evacuations of the nineties and follows the poverty, the exclusion and the fractures inside the family that come with migration. It was a large box office success in Turkey and was submitted as the country's Oscar entry. Carrying too many issues at once and leaning hard on melodrama are the usual criticisms.
