What Halam Geldi Is About
Erhan Kozan's 2014 film is set in a village close to the border in Northern Cyprus. In Akıncılar the call to prayer and church bells hang in the same air, Turkish music and Greek melodies run together, and families who came from Diyarbakır live alongside Cypriots. At the centre of the film are three thirteen-year-old children. The story moves around a ceremony and makes plain what that ceremony actually is: the marrying off of children. The film does not present this as local colour or as tradition; it looks from where the children stand. Miray Akay and Melisa Celayir lead.
