Half Baked

A friendship comedy made at the end of the 1990s. Four friends have been together since childhood. One day Kenny tries to feed a police horse, there is an accident and the horse dies. Kenny is arrested and his bail is enormous. The other three try to find the money. Thurgood cleans at a laboratory where there is high-grade medical marijuana. They decide to sell it. The business works and grows. Then the man who controls that trade in the city notices. The humour proceeds in sketch form: customer types, a promotional video, dream sequences and short scenes with guest performers. In one passage well-known names appear in brief cameos. Dave Chappelle wrote the screenplay with Neal Brennan; the two went on working together for years. Jim Breuer, Harland Williams, Guillermo Díaz and Rachel True are in the cast. Tamra Davis directed. It found no favour with critics on release but built a large audience on video and became a cult item. An enjoyable production for anyone who likes 1990s comedy and sketch-based humour. For a viewer looking for story, it is thin and the film depends entirely on its jokes.
