Half Brothers

Renato is a successful aviation executive in Mexico. Visiting his dying father, he learns something nobody told him: he has an American half brother. The father leaves the two of them a route to follow, and they end up retracing in reverse the path he took years earlier as a migrant. The best thing here is the migration story underneath the comedy. Renato's anger at his father turns into something else as he learns why the man left, and the film declines to use the border crossing as scenery. Luis Gerardo Méndez and Connor Del Rio lead, with Luke Greenfield directing. It opened on 4 December 2020 and took around three million dollars. Its flaw is imbalance. The mismatched brothers comedy is broad and predictable, the drama is delivered flatly, and the two tones keep interrupting each other. Who it is for: viewers who like a road film crossed with family drama. Who it is not for: anyone expecting sharp comedy.
