Seventeen

Héctor has been in a juvenile detention centre for two years and speaks to nobody. As part of a reintegration programme he is sent to an animal shelter, where he attaches to a dog called Oveja, as skittish as he is. When the dog is adopted he runs away to find him, and his older brother comes along. What works is the brothers. The older one is exhausted by responsibility, the younger can only care about a dog, and the distance between them narrows over the road. Daniel Sánchez Arévalo directed. Most of it was shot in Cantabria and the landscape sets the temperature of the film. Netflix released it on 18 October 2019. Its flaws: too many road movie coincidences, emotional beats pushed along by music, and a detention centre background that is never really opened. Who it is for: viewers who like stories about brothers and animals. Who it is not for: anyone expecting hard realism.
