Twelve-year-old Noura is caught between two worlds in the Halfaouine quarter of Tunis. On one side, the women's world of the baths his mother used to take him to, from which he is now barred because he has grown. On the other, the world of the men in the cafés, which he is not old enough to enter. So he moves along the terraces, watching, asking questions, and getting no straight answer from anyone. His only real friend is Salih, the neighbourhood troublemaker and its political outcast. Férid Boughedir's film is among the best-known works of Tunisian cinema: a coming-of-age story and, at the same time, a portrait of a closed society from the inside.
