Assi Dayan's 1976 Israeli comedy follows Sergio Konstanza, a swindler running from his debts. To get away from his creditor Mr Hasson he flees into the desert and joins an army reserve unit there. The unit is a shambles, nobody does anything seriously, and the sergeant turns out to be engaged to one of Mr Hasson's daughters. The comedy runs on military service, bureaucracy and a gallery of recognisable types. It became one of those popular comedies watched by generation after generation, with lines that passed into everyday speech. The trio of Gavri Banai, Shaike Levi and Yisrael Poliakov is at the centre of the cast.
