Mario finishes a seven-year sentence and walks out, but his old accomplices want their share of the robbery and will not leave him alone. His brother, a priest, offers him a way out: go to a small village in the Ardèche, stay with an elderly curé, and wait for the trouble to pass. The plan collapses immediately, because the old priest dies and the village assumes the new arrival is his replacement. Confession, sermons, funerals, all in the hands of a man who knows nothing about any of it.
