Lynne Naylor What Happy Happy Joy Joy: The Ren & Stimpy Story Is About
Ron Cicero and Kimo Easterwood's 2020 documentary covers the rise and collapse of an animated series that began airing in the early nineties. It pushed the limits of children's animation, quickly became a cult object, and changed when its creator was removed from the production because of his conduct. The first half shows the working environment. The artists worked with unusual freedom, which produced both the originality of the work and the disorder of the conditions, and deadlines were constantly missed. The second half is given to allegations about the creator's relationships with minors. Those making the allegations speak, and the documentary treats this not as a footnote but as a matter requiring the work itself to be reassessed. Who it's for: those interested in animation history and industry conditions. Who it's not for: viewers sensitive to the abuse of minors; the documentary treats it directly and in detail.
