Shazia Bano raised three children and worked for years in her husband's office. Abbas Khan is a lawyer. One day he takes a second wife and puts Shazia out of the house. The divorce follows. The maintenance he pays stops after a few months. Shazia goes to court. The case starts as a simple matter of maintenance and grows; what is argued is whether personal law or the criminal code applies. The judgment becomes a national subject. Then parliament steps in and a new law is passed. Suparn Verma directs; Reshu Nath wrote the screenplay. Yami Gautam Dhar plays Shazia and Emraan Hashmi plays Abbas Khan; Sheeba Chaddha and Danish Hussain are in the cast. The language is Hindi. The film opened on 7 November 2025. The source is a book by the journalist Jigna Vora; it rests on the Shah Bano case, one of the most argued over judgments of India's Supreme Court. The narrative is set in the eighties and the period is built in detail. The matter it treats is the conflict between personal law and constitutional right; the film gives it through one woman's case. The narrative does not build the husband as one dimensional; he sees himself inside a tradition too. The courtroom scenes are at its centre and the argument runs in legal terms. The film caused controversy on release and the subject of the case is still political today. Its limit is method; the narrative states its argument openly and the characters at times become carriers of it. Who it is for: viewers who like courtroom drama and films drawn from real cases. Who it is not for: it is argumentative, heavy, and the ending contested.
