What Heartlands Is About
Quiet Colin runs a small newsagent with his wife Sandra and plays darts for the local team. Catching Sandra with Geoff, the team captain, turns everything over: Geoff, who is a policeman, accuses Colin of mistreating her, and Colin is thrown off the team just as it qualifies for the league finals in Blackpool. He sets off there alone. Damien O'Donnell films the English provinces with humour and without condescension, and it holds one of Michael Sheen's early leading roles. Darts here is not a sport so much as the one patch of ground an ordinary man has to himself.
