What Heaven and Earth Is About
In feudal Japan two warlords, Kagetora and Takeda Shingen, each set out to stop the other from taking hegemony. The two of them chase one another across the country and meet in enormous engagements of cavalry and infantry, the best known of them at Kawanakajima. Younger and less brutal than his opponent, Kagetora has to find a way to be as hard as the man he is fighting, and there is a price for it. Haruki Kadokawa adapted Chogoro Kaionji’s novel, and at five billion yen it was one of the most ambitious Japanese productions of its moment. The battle sequences were shot in Alberta, Canada, over the summer of 1989. It opened on 24 November 1990 and finished as the highest-grossing Japanese film of the year.
