Heaven's Waiting

Dan Villegas's 2018 Filipino film follows Lisang, held in purgatory. Her passage has been postponed because of how she behaved, and her name comes up for review again. Purgatory is built here like a waiting room. With a young woman she meets there, Lisang goes back over her past; the narrative begins in comedy and arrives somewhere grieving, taking forgiveness as its subject. Eddie Garcia and Gina Pareño lead. The production is small and the space limited. The tone is kept light. Who it's for: those who like Filipino independent cinema and drama with a fantastical frame. Who it's not for: viewers for whom death and regret would be difficult.
