Heidi

A girl who has lost her parents is left with her grandfather, who lives alone in the Swiss Alps. He speaks to nobody and the village does not want him. She is then sent to Frankfurt to live with a wealthy family. The film makes that second section its subject: the child learns to read and write, and falls ill from homesickness. The narrative does not present the wealth as a gain. Alain Gsponer directed, with Bruno Ganz as the grandfather. It is adapted from Johanna Spyri's novel and shot on location in the Alps. Who it's for: families looking for a classic adaptation. Who it's not for: viewers wanting a fast children's film; the narrative is calm and the first section almost without incident.
