What The Grüninger File Is About
In 1938, after Austria is annexed to Germany, Switzerland closes its borders to Jewish refugees; for thousands without papers that means being sent back. Paul Grüninger, the police commander of the canton of St Gallen, does not obey the order: he backdates the papers of those arriving so that they appear to be legal, and lets thousands into the country. When the federal police learn of it, Grüninger is dismissed, tried and convicted; his name was cleared only long after his death. The film shows not the man’s heroism but the everyday shape of the decision: paper, a stamp and one official’s signature. Alain Gsponer’s hundred minute Swiss film was adapted from a real case; Stefan Kurt appears.
