What Life Actually Is About
Roland, buried in his work for years, suddenly finds himself at home after he is let go from the risk management post he held at a large company. His wife has taken hold of her gallery and of an affair; the older son ignores his father’s well meant advice about women and comes out as gay while doing his military service; the younger son Linus runs experiments with explosives in his room and blows up the garden sculptures of the neighbours. What the film looks at is not one household but two families side by side: one about to collapse inward, the other about to explode. The account keeps pain and comedy at the same table. Ulrich Noethen, Katja Riemann and Hannah Herzsprung appear in Alain Gsponer’s hundred and three minute production, released in 2007 and later awarded the Grimme Prize.
