Hello, My Name Is Doris

The story of a woman past sixty. Doris has worked at the same desk in the same office for years. She lived with her mother; the mother has just died and the house is now full of what she left. Doris's brother wants it cleared out and she does not want to throw anything away. A new art director joins the office. John is young, courteous and kind to her. Doris falls in love with him. What follows is both funny and painful. She learns his interests online, opens a fake account, goes to the concerts he goes to, and becomes unexpectedly popular among the young people there. What the film is interested in is not humiliation. Doris makes a fool of herself, but the narrative does not mock her; it is about someone who lived for another person for years wanting her own life for the first time. Sally Field leads and carries the whole film. Max Greenfield, Tyne Daly and Beth Behrs are in the cast. Michael Showalter directed. A warm and honest example for anyone who likes American independent comedy and character-driven storytelling. For a viewer expecting an easy happy ending, the film does not provide one and leaves things in a more realistic place.
