What Here Is Your Life Is About

In the Sweden of the 1910s, Olof, fourteen years old, leaves home and goes to work. He takes jobs at a logging camp, as a cinema projectionist, in a brickworks, at a travelling fair. In each place he meets different people, hears different ideas, and learns for the first time what a union is. The years pass and the boy slowly builds a view of his own. Jan Troell's first feature is adapted from Eyvind Johnson's novels. It runs close to three hours and the film is in no hurry: the seasons, the work, the silence. Troell shot it himself and edited it himself. Eddie Axberg plays Olof. The telling does not hang growing up on a single event; it shows it as something that accumulates.
