What The Flight of the Eagle Is About
In 1897 the Swedish engineer Salomon August Andrée plans to reach the North Pole by balloon. He lifts off from Svalbard with two companions. The balloon is filled with hydrogen, its steering is questionable, and the inadequacy of the preparations is plain before take-off. Andrée decides to go anyway. The three men are never heard from again. Jan Troell's film rests on a real event: the bodies and diaries of the expedition were found on an island in 1930. Max von Sydow plays Andrée. Troell also shot the film himself and filmed the walk across the ice at length and with patience. The telling manufactures no heroism; it shows how national expectation sent a man off unprepared.
