What Himalaya Is About
A village in the Dolpo region of Nepal, five thousand metres up, carries salt down by yak every year to trade for grain. When the caravan's leader dies, the old chieftain Tinle blames the young Karma, who wants the position, for his son's death, and insists on setting the departure by the stars. Karma will not wait and leaves early with his own caravan, so two caravans, two generations and two decisions race on the same mountain. Eric Valli shot it with local people at real altitude. It was nominated for an Oscar for Nepal, the country's only nomination to date.
