What Hindle Wakes Is About

Fanny works in a cotton mill. She is a working class girl in Lancashire. During the mill’s holiday week she goes to Blackpool. The son of the mill owner goes with her. They spend a few days together. Once they are back, word gets out. Both families are up in arms. The young man is told to marry her. He duly proposes. Fanny turns him down. She makes her own decision and chooses to stay independent. That ending went directly against the morals of its day. The film is adapted from Stanley Houghton’s play of 1912. Estelle Brody and John Stuart appear in the hundred and twenty minute silent film, a British production Maurice Elvey finished in 1927.
