What His Wife's Diary Is About
Ivan Bunin, the first Russian writer to win the Nobel Prize, is living out his exile in the south of France, and his house has turned into a strange communal arrangement: his wife Vera, the young poet Galina, the opera singer Marga and a young literary man, Leonid, all under one roof. The film treats this less as a love triangle than as a kind of house arrest in which everyone redraws the boundaries daily, and it watches Vera hardest of all, weighing how much she sees against how much she chooses not to. Alexei Uchitel directs, with Andrei Smirnov as Bunin. It took the Kinotavr grand prize and Nika awards for film, actor and cinematography, and went out as Russia’s Oscar submission, though it was not nominated.
