Siberia, 1945. The war is over, but Soviet prisoners repatriated from Germany are being sent east into camps on the assumption that they collaborated. Ignat arrives at one of these forgotten settlements as a decorated hero who is in fact shell-shocked, ill and half broken. In the camp trains are an object of worship, speed is a mania, and the locomotives are given human names. When word spreads that an abandoned steam engine is sitting on an island in the forest, the men turn it into a race that puts everyone at risk. Alexei Uchitel's film was nominated for the Golden Globe for best foreign language film and was Russia's Oscar submission.
