Sacha Gervasi’s film comes from Stephen Rebello’s book on the making of Psycho, which took a long route to the screen. In 2007 the Montecito Picture Company made a first look deal with Paramount, the original distributor of Psycho; after four years of development there it moved to Fox Searchlight. John J. McLaughlin wrote the first drafts. Rebello then did uncredited revisions and rewrites on the adaptation of his own book, and lists that work twice on his own site, once under Paramount and once under Fox Searchlight. Shooting began on 13 April 2012 in Los Angeles and wrapped on 31 May with a scene staging the 1960 New York premiere of Psycho. Danny Elfman scored it. In 1998 he had re-recorded Bernard Herrmann’s original Psycho music for Gus Van Sant’s shot for shot remake. The film took one Oscar nomination, for makeup and hairstyling, two BAFTA nominations and one Golden Globe nomination for Helen Mirren. None turned into a win. A good fit if you want Alma Reville’s share of the cutting room, and Hitchcock paying for the picture himself once the studio declines. Not for viewers after a whole career; the story stays inside the making of Psycho and leaves what follows to the closing cards and a raven on a shoulder.
