Hitler Versus Picasso

In 1937 two exhibitions opened in Munich. One was Degenerate Art, where modern works were hung so as to be mocked. The other was the Great German Art Exhibition, whose selection Hitler made himself. From these two the documentary goes after the works the Nazis seized across Europe: where they went, whose houses they were taken from, how many came back. Among them are Botticelli, Klee, Matisse, Monet, Chagall, Renoir and Gauguin. And there are the restitution cases still running today. Claudio Poli directs the Italian documentary; ninety-four minutes, narrated by Toni Servillo. Those speaking include historians and the grandchildren of families trying to recover works, Simon Goodman among them. It is about not only the stolen art but what happened to the people it belonged to.
