What Hochelaga, Land of Souls Is About
A collapse in the field of Montreal’s Percival Molson Stadium opens up the ground that has lain beneath it for centuries, and the Mohawk archaeologist Baptiste Asigny takes charge of the dig. The deeper it goes, the further back the film jumps: the stories of people who crossed this same patch of earth, long before the city was founded, unfold one after another. François Girard ties the whole picture to a single site and works down through it layer by layer, each layer carrying its own language, era and catastrophe. The result has the rhythm of an excavation report, telling the memory of a place rather than a plot. Samian, Raoul Max Trujillo, Vincent Perez and Siân Phillips appear, and Canada sent the film as its foreign-language entry to the 2018 Oscars.
