What Hoffman Is About
Benjamin Hoffman is middle-aged, solitary and odd. He finds out that the fiancé of the young secretary in his office has been involved in a crime, and holds it over her: unless she spends a weekend with him he will pass the information on. She has to agree. The two of them are left alone in Hoffman's flat. Peter Sellers takes one of his rare parts outside comedy in Alvin Rakoff's British film, opposite Sinéad Cusack. It takes place almost in one room and rests on talk. The telling does not make Hoffman likeable and does not justify what he does; watched now, how uncomfortable it is stands out more sharply still.
