What Hollow Reed Is About
The marriage of the doctor Martin Wyatt ends after he says he is gay, and custody of his son Oliver goes to his former wife Hannah and her new partner Frank. One day Oliver turns up at the house his father shares with Tom, saying boys in the park beat him up. After a second incident Martin works out that it is Frank who has been hitting the boy, and that Hannah does not know. Taking that to court means accepting that his own life will be judged in the same courtroom. The film puts the protection of a child and the identity of a father into the same hearing, and it makes its own side plain. Martin Donovan, Ian Hart and Joely Richardson appear in Angela Pope’s hundred and two minute British film, completed in 1996.
