What Home from Home - Chronicle of a Vision Is About
The 1840s, in the village of Schabbach in the Hunsrück. Hunger, taxes, illness and hopelessness are sending thousands of people to Brazil. Jakob, the younger son of the Simon family, wants to go as well; he reads, teaches himself the languages of distant countries and imagines a place he has never seen. But the line between those who leave and those who stay cuts every life in that village in two. Edgar Reitz's film is not a sequel to the Heimat series but its prelude: the same village, some eighty years earlier, tracing where the Simon family came from. It runs three hours and forty-five minutes. It was shot in black and white, with a few frames opening into colour along the way.
