Hong Kong 1941

Years later a woman tells the story of the occupation of Hong Kong in 1941 through her own life. Nam is the daughter of a wealthy rice merchant and lives with seizures. Her childhood friend Keung comes from a family that has fallen and has grown up on the street. Fay, an actor from the north, joins the two of them. The three plan to get out of the city, but the invasion begins on the very day they mean to leave. Leong Po-Chih's film tells the occupation not through large battle scenes but through three people boxed in. The subject is not heroism; it is finding food, hiding, and not knowing who to trust. The question of collaboration is directly inside the film. Chow Yun-Fat plays Fay, one of his early roles. The telling clears no side wholesale.
