Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 2

The wagon train pushing west during the Civil War keeps moving. The settlement in the San Pedro Valley is rebuilt, Hayes Ellison tries to shake the men chasing him, and the account between the Apache and the settlers stays open. The story does not end here either. The film is not interested in a single hero but in five or six stories running at once: Costner wants to build the western as an epic, and most of his characters never touch each other in this chapter either. The result is a middle section that does not complete itself. The form is classical western: wide landscape, long scenes on horseback, period costume and slow pace. Kevin Costner directed, wrote and starred, and financed most of the production himself. The film's fate is more interesting than its story. Chapter 1 collapsed at the box office, taking $29 million in America and $38 million worldwide; New Line pulled the sequel from its 16 August 2024 date and postponed it indefinitely. It still screened at the Venice festival on 7 September 2024 and again at Santa Barbara in February 2025. Despite the time since, there is still no general release date. Sienna Miller and Sam Worthington are in the cast. Who it is for: viewers curious about classical westerns and Costner's appetite for storytelling. Who it is not for: anyone expecting a standalone film. This chapter is neither a beginning nor an end, and with the series in doubt the story is left in mid-air.
