What Hôtel Terminus: The Life and Times of Klaus Barbie Is About
Klaus Barbie was the Gestapo chief in occupied Lyon. His headquarters were at the Hôtel Terminus and he tortured people there; he was held responsible for the death of Jean Moulin and for sending forty-four Jewish children from Izieu to the camps. He was not caught after the war: American intelligence used him, and he was then helped to get to South America. For thirty years he lived in Bolivia under another name, did business, and advised governments. He was extradited to France in 1983 and tried in 1987. Marcel Ophüls directs; four and a half hours. He knocks on the doors of people who remember what happened forty years earlier: neighbours, colleagues, lawyers, survivors, former American officials. Most do not want to talk, and their not talking is part of the film. It won the documentary feature Oscar in 1989.
