What The Memory of Justice Is About
Marcel Ophüls puts the Nuremberg trials, what France did in Algeria and what America did in Vietnam inside the same film. The question he asks is an uncomfortable one: when a country sits in judgement on another, where does it file its own conduct? The film does not turn comparison into equivalence, but it lets nobody leave clean either. Running close to five hours, it all but vanished after a limited release. In 2015 the Film Foundation and the Academy Film Archive found an unlabelled 16mm negative in a studio vault and restored it, recovering the original recordings under the English voiceover so that the people interviewed can be heard in their own voices.
