Here and Elsewhere

Jean-Luc Godard and Anne-Marie Miéville's 1976 film grew out of an unfinished project. In 1970 Godard and his group went to shoot a film about Palestinian fighters and took the footage, but the film was never completed and most of the people filmed were killed in the fighting soon afterwards. Years later he and Miéville took the material up again and set images of a French family watching television against it. The subject is no longer Palestine but how those images are used: who is spoken for, how sound is attached to picture and how a revolutionary film builds its own propaganda. The account advances by confessing its own failure. The form is fragmented, with text, writing and sound constantly crossing. Who it's for: viewers who follow political essay film and Godard. Who it's not for: anyone looking for information about the subject; this is not a documentary but an act of self-criticism.
