How to Make a Killing

Becket Redfellow sells luxury suits in New York until he realises he is still in line to inherit from the wealthy family that disowned his mother, and starts killing his relatives one at a time to reach a 28 billion dollar fortune. The film names its source openly: Kind Hearts and Coronets from 1949. The plan unravels through his childhood friend Julia. Becket is arrested for a murder he did not commit, and Julia wants the entire fortune in exchange for the evidence that would clear him. John Patton Ford wrote and directed, his first film after Emily the Criminal. Glen Powell leads, with Margaret Qualley, Jessica Henwick, Bill Camp, Zach Woods, Topher Grace and Ed Harris. Todd Banhazl shot it and Emile Mosseri wrote the score. A24 released it in February 2026, and it grossed 21.6 million dollars against a 15 million budget. Reviews split at 45 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. The consensus is pointed: a tonally bizarre comic thriller that deploys Powell's likability to head-scratching ends and wants to eat the rich and have them too. Who it is for: viewers who like black comedy and inheritance plots. Who it is not for: anyone who needs tonal consistency.
